Where the Social Rubber Meets the Road: Real-Life Examples of Organizations and Info Pros Using Social Networking Tools

Social networking tools like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and others can be fun to use, but how are organizations and information professionals actually using them to share and find information effectively?
This jam-packed presentation will look at the real-life practical applications of social networking tools, both inside and outside of the organization. You'll hear about several recent business examples, issues around security, find out more about how Sun Microsystems is using these tools, and learn about the positives and negatives of using these tools for research and competitive information from an experienced info pro.

Speakers:
Marcia Rodney has been with Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. for more than six years, initially as senior analyst in library services reporting to strategic intelligence, and also supporting the scientific and engineering staff. She now works as an operations analyst, reporting to the Albuquerque office of Ball's Systems Engineering Solutions business unit. Marcia both tracks and teaches social networking for her team, as well as implementing its tools as part of specific research assignments. Prior to her work with Ball, Marcia was part of the competitive intelligence team at Qwest, supported the technical research at Maxtor (now Seagate), worked at the Earth Sciences and Maps Libraries at CU-Boulder, and in long ago chapters was librarian for Communication Arts and a researcher at CBS News. As principal analyst for her own firm, RSL Research Group, she works on survey design and analysis, primarily in the library field, as well as supporting small business clients. Marcia just returned from the 2009 Search Engine Meeting, and is looking forward to more time on her bike and a different kind of searching.

Christy Confetti-Higgins has been a part of Sun Microsystem's global Digital Libraries & Research team for 12 years. She is passionate about working with people to get the information and connections they need to get their jobs done. The team leverages many social media tools for their own services as well as helps other groups at Sun realize the business value of these tools. Christy also manages the group's communications and awareness channels about available information resources and services. Christy is an active member of SLA and the Rocky Mountain Chapter, lives in Colorado, loves to bike, ski and spend time with her family!

Scott Brown recently started an independent information practice, Social Information Group, dedicated to helping individuals and organizations effectively use social networking tools for information sharing, networking and marketing. For the previous nine years he was a Senior Information Specialist with Digital Libraries & Research, the library and information organization at Sun Microsystems. He has provided training in Second Life and in Real Life to Sun employees and other firms to help them get started in virtual worlds. He received his MLIS from San Jose State University in 1999. He is a past President of RMSLA, and is currently Past Chair and 2009 planner for the Competitive Intelligence Division of SLA. He is also currently pursuing a Masters in Counseling through Regis University in Denver. Scott is highly enjoying producing a music podcast on Music Therapy.
